Platform algorithms have shifted from rewarding engagement volume to rewarding engagement quality. This matters for how you write and what you optimize for.

The old game was reach maximization: make content that lots of people would interact with, even superficially. The current game is about keeping people on the platform, which rewards content that drives genuine interaction: comments that require thought, saves, shares that bring in new users.

The signals that matter now

Saves are the most underrated metric. When someone saves a post, they're signaling they want to come back to it. Platforms treat this as a strong quality signal, more meaningful than a like.

Comment depth. An engagement-bait post might get 200 fire emoji comments. A genuinely useful post gets 40 comments where people describe their own situation or ask a follow-up question. The latter performs better with the algorithm.

New follower acquisition from a single post. Content that brings in followers who then engage with your next few posts signals audience-building to the algorithm. Content that only gets reactions from existing followers is less rewarded.

What this means for content strategy

You want to optimize for depth over breadth. A post that makes 500 people genuinely stop and think beats one that gets a quick reaction from 5,000 who keep scrolling.

This favors specific, opinionated content. Generic advice doesn't make people save posts. Vague inspiration doesn't generate meaningful comments. Specific, disagreeable takes do.

The formats that tend to perform well

  • Process content: exactly how you did something, with real specifics
  • Contrarian takes: a well-reasoned argument against something most people in your space accept as true
  • Documented outcomes: before and after with the actual mechanics explained
  • Answers to questions you get asked repeatedly

The common thread is specificity. Specific content rewards thoughtful engagement. That's what the algorithm rewards now.
